Korea to Build Nuclear Reactors in Poland

Korea will sell its homegrown APR 1400 nuclear reactors to Poland under a deal worth up to W30 trillion (US$1=W1,424).

The deal marks the first sale of Korean nuclear equipment since President Yoon Suk-yeol reversed the previous administration’s nuclear phaseout policy earlier this year.

The last Korean nuclear plant deal was to the UAE during the Lee Myung-bak administration in 2009. The latest deal raises hopes of further orders from countries that recognize Korea’s edge in nuclear reactor technology and plant construction.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee Chang-yang and Polish Minister for State Assets Jacek Sasin signed a memorandum of understanding at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul on Monday.

The project involves construction of two to four 1.4-GW nuclear reactors on the site of a coal power plant in Patnow, central Poland that will be closed down next year. The deal is worth between W10 trillion and W30 trillion and construction is expected to start before 2026.

Earlier, the Polish government selected U.S.-based Westinghouse Electric to build six 1-1.6-GW nuclear power plants.
