Going back to our childhood summers is something we have all done. For designer Moisés Nieto that regression resulted in a collection full of memories and traditional Spanish references. “I always introduce craftsmanship in our designs, but this time around it is present in a wide range of formats: from bobbin lace to crochet, including macramé and pleated techniques,” he said. “I went back to those hot summers in Andalusia, where you had to stay inside the house for most of the day due to the heat, and I recalled those little details in my grandma’s house: dish towels, curtains, pictures, big monstera plants…”
Those plants are now graphic prints that garnish some of Nieto’s classic pieces, such as A-line dresses and midi skirts. So does the crochet, which the designer transferred from a tapestry onto luxurious wrap skirts. It’s an approach that doesn’t necessarily mean just tradition. “The collection speaks a lot about the ’90s as well,” Nieto said. “My childhood years were during through that decade, and the whole palette speaks about those vibrant colors”—red, pink, turquoise and yellow—“that defined the period.”
As for the silhouettes, the creative proposal includes blazers, pleated skirts, and midi dresses—all usual suspects for the designer. “Everything has an oversize feeling. Nothing is too tight or corseted. I always think of women in my family as inspiration: they like to be comfortable, and the pieces they wear are usually fresh and easy,” he said. Nieto’s footwear was particularly impressive: “We made those funky mules ourselves in just one afternoon,” he said. “They are upcycled from a previous collection’s shoes and snippets and they follow the same pattern as the whole collection: they are sophisticated and feminine yet very wearable.”
