Murphy has been awarded a major contract to expand a Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) facility on the Isle of Grain in Kent.
Murphy’s contract, understood to be worth more than £100m, includes delivery of three gas compressors and equipment rooms, two submerged combustion vaporisers and two export tank pumps. The job is part of the National Grid’s project to upgrade the capacity at the Grain LNG facility by 25 per cent, from 1m cubic metres to around 1.2 million cubic metres.
The contractor started working on plans for the project last March and was picked as preferred bidder in October.
Vinci won a £175m contract to deliver the new tanks at the Grain site at the start of last year. Murphy’s works will be carried out in parallel with Vinci’s, with the project scheduled to be completed by mid-2025.
Murphy energy managing director Jon Downs said the contract win built on its past work and relationship with the National Grid.
Murphy was drafted in to complete two gas compressor projects for the National Grid in Peterborough and Huntingdon after Costain left the job. In December Costain announced the contract termination would have a £53.5m hit on its results for 2021. Costain originally won the £113m contract for the two sites in November 2016.
