On the occasion of the International Week of the Deaf: These are the problems of 350,000 people living in Serbia with hearing difficulties

povodom međunarodne nedelje gluvih

) It is estimated that 350,000 people in Serbia live with hearing difficulties, and that only a small number of them use hearing aids even then, mostly in one ear. According to research from previous years, every eighth Belgrade high school student has hearing problems.

According to Dušan Nikolić, President of the City Organization of the Deaf in Belgrade – GOGB , deaf people are deaf every day they face many problems, and above all systemic, because support for them is not regulated as support for people with disabilities.

These are the problems of people living with hearing impairment

– In our country there is no unified base or exact data on the number of deaf and hard of hearing people who use Serbian sign language – said Nikolić at the ceremony held on the occasion of the International Week of the Deaf. – Considering that sign language has not been researched and documented, there is no teaching content for language learning, and since the use of teaching in Serbian sign language is not applied in schools for the deaf, but spoken, the level of primary and secondary education of deaf children is low new. According to unofficial data, the number of highly educated deaf people is very small, so people with this problem are employed in low and medium-skilled positions.

– The City Organization of the Deaf in Belgrade is trying to help deaf and hard of hearing people, and we want to be their partner on that path – said Rastko Savić, a representative of the hearing house Neuroth , which on the occasion of marking the International Week of the Deaf handed over a donation to the City Organization of the Deaf in Belgrade that will make their lives easier – alarm clocks, Linx Enzo device and a package of more than 3,000 hearing aid batteries. It is also a birthday present for GOGB, which this year celebrates 95 years of existence and work.

the problem is – not accepting the problem

As experts say, the hearing problem has been around since the age of fifty, but it the more pronounced in Serbia than in other Western European countries, the greater the rejection of the problem. Namely, only seven years from the first moment when they feel bad hearing, people go for a test or buy a device. During this time, hearing becomes dramatically worse.

And headphones also cause hearing damage

Hearing problems do not only affect the elderly, but also occur in children. Pediatricians say that hearing loss in childhood, whether it is a congenital defect or caused by factors during or after birth, can affect the baby’s ability to develop speech, language and social skills. The main reasons for hearing loss in young people are loud music in clubs, the use of headphones and video games.
