Phoenix Coyotes assign forward Dylan Guenther to WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Coyotes assigned forward Dylan Guenther to the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday.

Seattle acquired Guenther’s rights from the Edmonton Oil Kings on Jan. 10.

Guenther’s overtime goal earned Canada a 3-2 win over Czechia last month in the final of the world junior hockey championship in Halifax. It marked the second straight year Canada had won the tournament and fifth time since 2015.

The Coyotes had loaned Guenther to the Canadian junior squad.

“Just like the world junior championships where Dylan helped lead Canada to a gold medal, this is a tremendous opportunity for him to join a very good Seattle club, play top line minutes, and hopefully lead his team to a Memorial Cup,” Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong said in a statement. “Dylan has played well for us this season and he has a very bright future with the Coyotes.

“We look forward to watching his development the rest of the season.”

Guenther, 19, had 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 33 games with the Coyotes. The six-foot-two, 181-pound Edmonton native registered seven goals and three assists in seven games with the Canadian junior hockey team.

The Coyotes selected Guenther in the first round, No. 9 overall, in the 2021 NHL entry draft.
