“Progress remains to be made so that French hydrogen technologies are at the cutting edge”, warns Olivier Joubert (CNRS)

To ensure the industrial deployment of the hydrogen sector, investments in research are still necessary, underlines Olivier Joubert, director of the CNRS Hydrogen Research Federation. Technological challenges are still to be taken up in order to be able to meet the objectives of mass production.

The deployment of hydrogen represents the challenge major in the sector for the coming decade. What is the role of research in this strategy?
We aim to improve what already exists and forecast essential technologies within fifteen years. The challenge being to massively produce green hydrogen, we are particularly mobilized on electrolyser technologies as well as on links with energy sources upstream in the chain, whether photovoltaic, wind or hydroelectric. In the field of mobility, we are working on fuel cells (PaC), but also on the system, in particular to improve hybridization with lithium-ion batteries or supercapacitors. There is also a worldwide consensus in the world of hydrogen research concerning the areas to prioritize.
