Archer hawk is the latest MCU miniseries for Disney+, starring Jeremy Renner again as Clint Barton, the Avenger “loose” in the eyes of much of the public, dealing with remnants of the darkest period of his past, and new problems in the form of an insistent candidate for sidekick, the young Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).
With Hawkeye completed, let’s take a deep look at the miniseries and its characters, with all spoilers to which we are entitled. Be warned.
Archer hawk and Spider-Man: No Homecoming take place around the same time, with the events of the miniseries taking place shortly after those of the film, during Christmas week. Clint is visiting New York with his kids as he tries to adjust to being a family man for the first time, without cosmic crises and killer robots lurking around.
Clint is still mourning Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow
During the blip years, Clint sank into depression as he lost his entire family, and without any direction, became a killer of underworld criminals, or as he says in the series , “a weapon” without purpose. The Ronin made a lot of enemies in the 5 years he was active, and after the blip, everyone thought he was dead.
The uniform and the sword were lost when the Avengers compound was detonated by Thanos, but were eventually recovered and put up for auction on the black market, which Clint is tracking (not for the costume, but also), this being his initial liaison with the Kate Bishop’s core.
She was a child who lost her father during the Battle of New York, but was impressed to see Clint fighting the chitauri “with a stick and a string”, without any power. This inspired her to practice archery and martial arts, hoping to one day become a hero and be recognized by her idol. Of course, because she is young and rich, Kate is at first somewhat conceited and not very humble.
And troublemaker, of course.
)
Kate’s mother, Eleanor Bishop (Vera Farmiga, who played Lorraine Warren in franchise The Conjuring ) is the president of a security company, and is married to socialite Jack (Tony Dalton, the Lallo Salamanca of Better Call Saul), nephew of tycoon Armand Duquesne III (Simon Callow), who Kate sees threatening her mother.
The party to announce the engagement also serves as a front for the auction where the uniform is, and during a Invasion of the Coat Gang (that’s the name) for items, Kate dons the Ronin costume to hide her identity and gives the bad guys a good beating. In this, the media and criminals think the real Ronin has returned, which is how Clint finds Kate.
From here, things go downhill from there. a plot involving the underworld of NY, Kate’s family and associates, and certain figures that many thought they would never see again in Marvel TV productions.
Is Hawkeye a loofah? A lot of people said that Clint Barton was the most bland character in the Avengers, and with good reason. Both Joss Whedon and the Russo brothers never bothered to give a full personality to him, who was basically “the arrow guy” with a secret family, used as a subterfuge while going for Gail Simone’s refrigerator, so that justify the transformation of Hawkeye into Ronin.
In the comics, the image of a useless character and its use as comic relief lasted for decades, after all he was a human with a bow and arrows surrounded by gods, men in armor, super soldiers, super powerful mutants and co. ltd. Still, he was leader of the West Coast Avengers, secret agent and married (sort of) SHIELD agent Bobbi Morse, codename Harpy (Mockingbird in the original).
And of course Clint already has a death and resurrection on his resume, after all, comics.
There is a reference to Hawkeye’s original uniform AND another to Harpy, but not to his version of Agents by SHIELD (Credit: Playback/Marvel Comics/Disney)Clint, like Wanda/Scarlet Witch and Pietro/Mercury, started his comic book career as a villain, specifically Iron Man, to only later regenerate and be admitted into a new lineup of the Avengers, which along with the Maxi twins moff, former members of the Brotherhood of Mutants, were led by Captain America.
Because Steve Rogers was commanding a team of ex-criminals, this formation was known as the “Captain’s Gang”. This editorial decision was made because Stan Lee did not want the group to continue to be compared to the Justice League, thus the original Avengers Thor, Iron Man, Giant and Wasp were removed from the pages of the magazine.
Clint came to assume the identity of the Giant more than once, precisely because of his insecurities in being a human without powers, playing the hero.
Art by Alan Davis, always sensational (Credit: Reproduction/Marvel Comics/Disney)Kate Bishop is a more recent character. She appeared during the first series of the Young Avengers , and Steve allowed her to use the name Hawkeye (in the original, just Hawkeye) around the time when Clint was dead, as a consequence of the saga Avengers: The Downfall (thanks, Wanda). When he revived after M Dynasty and Rogers was killed in the aftermath of Civil War , the two met for the first time, on the occasion that Clint almost assumed the mantle of Captain America.
And Kate, without know who was under the mask, rubbed a nice soap on his hero (and made the joke with Gavião’s second uniform, which is just no worse than what he used
in the 1990s):
Take it, Clint (Credit: Playback/Marvel Comics/Disney) In time, Clint and Kate came to work. working together as a duo in the comics, and a lot of this series, released in 2012 (in 2018, Kate assumed the title
and Clint became the sidekick; she will win
a new series , and alone for the 1st time, in 2022) sets the tone of the Disney+ miniseries, both in relationship and in aesthetics.
Actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld, who came from Pitch Perfect 2
In the series, Clint doesn’t care about teaching anyone, least of all a post-teen who thinks she is (her own words) ) the best archer in the world. He knows all too well the consequences of his job, and even with Kate Bishop involved in a murder in which Ronin is the suspect, he doesn’t want to help much.
Over time, the two develop a cooperative relationship, which eventually evolves into an alliance that, it is hoped, will last for the next MCU releases, whether in film or TV.
Since Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios is giving more and more space to new heroes and heroines, who will have to fill the holes left by the Vi ngers. Kate Bishop is the newest addition, alongside Carol Danvers/
Not to mention the new phase of Aranha, which will be much more urban and closer to the comics.
One of the most interesting additions to the MCU comes in the form of Maya Lopez, the leader of the Gang of outerwear. Despite being deaf and using a mechanical leg, she is a tough nut to crack and an expert in martial arts, and but heavy weariness on everyone who gets in her way. Everyone same.
In the comics, she is known as Echo and was the first to wear the Ronin costume (how ironic…), before passing it on to Clint. She is played by Native American actress Alaqua Cox, who is in fact hearing impaired and has one leg missing. In interviews, she spoke of efforts by Jeremy Renner and other actors to learn American Sign Language (ASL) in order to better communicate with her.
Oh yes, Echo will also get a series of her own in the future, probably addressing her transition from criminal to hero.
The strangest part of the wave of new heroes is probably Jack Duquesne, who in the comics was the Swordsman, one of the masters of Hawkeye and ex-Avenger, j He is deceased (I will not go into the merits of his cottati copy, the one he married Mantis). The series hints at the beginning that he is one of the villains, just to open up the possibilities of future participation of the character, perhaps in other series.
A man trained in all known forms of swordsmanship, Duquesne could be an interesting addition to the Moon Knight series, for example.
To close, we have Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), back from Black Widow and pissed off with Clint, whom she blames for the death of her sister Natasha. She is the unpredictable factor of the series, one hour she’s having lunch with Kate at her house, the other she’s trying to send Hawkeye to the ditch.
In Hawkeye, Yelena is worked as the inevitable second Black Widow that we will see in the next productions of Marvel Studios. Just don’t expect Scarlett Johansson’s style femme fatale, Pugh goes much more in the extroverted vibe.
It is through her hands that we have the biggest revelation of the series, the rescue of a character that, after the end of the Netflix series, no one would think of seeing again.
The return of those who never went
The rumors surrounding the return of the protagonists of the series that ABC produced for Netflix, who would be reintroduced into the MCU and played by the same actors, had been circulating for some time, and were kind of confirmed with Spider-Man: No Return Home, in the participation of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, and already demonstrating his skills.
The second to appear is precisely his nemesis: Wilson Fisk, better known as the King of Crime, once again lived sensationally by Vincent D’Onofrio. Here he appears even stronger and more resilient than the one seen in the Daredevil series
, having endured almost everything that was thrown at him, literally.
Fisk remains a menacing and a presence oppressive on screen, just your tone of voice is enough to make your henchmen’s blood run cold in their veins.
Who has the courage to tell Fisk to his face that he’s cosplaying as a rascal from Rio? (Credit: Playback/Marvel Studios/Disney)
And don’t trust the final scene of your participation, which is an exact reproduction of what happened in the comics, and you know the rule.
In addition, rumors point out that Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Frank Castle / Punisher (Jon Bernthal) will be the next to be reinserted in the MCU; there is no information about Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), however.
Conclusion
Gavião Arqueiro may not be the definitive work to be enjoyed at Christmas (this title is still from A Felicidade Não Buy It , with Die Hard in the 2nd position), but it’s a compact and fun series about redemption and passing the torch on to new generations of heroes, which is what this transitional phase of the MCU is based on.
You will to have both Clint’s redemption arc, learning to accept the gift he’s been given by moving on with her life, and Kate Bishop’s entire growth process, evolving from a spoiled, privileged girl to someone who takes on the responsibilities of the life she’s chosen.
Overall, the 4 series launched in 2021 by Marvel for Disney+ set the stage well for the works that will come next, and there is a lot of material and characters to be used in future films and series.
