The Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) respectfully accepted the decision of the Australian federal court to uphold the deportation of Serbian Novak Djokovic, while recommended “strongly” the vaccination of all the players once the scandal with the number 1 player in world tennis has been resolved.

”Today’s decision to uphold the cancellation of the Australian visa of Novak Djokovic marks the end of a series of deeply unfortunate events”, introduces the ATP in a statement issued this Sunday at the beginning of the Australian Open.

The Serb arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday of last week after obtaining a medical exemption to play the tournament without being inoculated against Covid-19 but the Australian government decided to cancel his visa for not complying with the regulations to combat the pandemic, which generated two appeals from the player’s lawyers and the pronouncement of a judge from the state of Victory first and a Federal Court later.

” In short, the decisions of the judicial authorities in matters of public health must be respected. More time is required to take stock of the facts and learn from this situation”, assumed the ATP.

“Regardless of how it got to this point, Novak is one of the greatest champions in our sport and his absence from the Australian Open is a loss to the game”, he states.

”We know how turbulent the last few days have been for Novak and how much he wanted to defend his title in Melbourne. We wish him the best and look forward to seeing him back on court soon,” he adds.

Finally, “the ATP continues to strongly recommend vaccination for all players.”
