The last Norwegian Arctic coal mine, in the Svalbard archipelago, will close in 2023, the mine authorities said on Thursday. The termination of its activities will result in the loss of 80 jobs. The field was operated for about 120 years.
Norwegian mining company (Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani – SNSK) has closed the largest mines in the archipelago in the last 20 years, leaving only the smaller mine no. 7 to maintain the supply of raw materials for the coal-fired power plant operating there.
“With the end of the contract to supply the power plant, there will be no more grounds for the mine to continue operating,” said SNSK chief Morten Dyrstad.
During the transition period between powering electricity from coal and switching to renewable energy permanently, diesel will be the main source of energy.
Mine no. 7 by 2023 will increase the output from 90 thousand. tons per year up to 125 thousand. tone. The Reuters agency reminds that this is still a small production compared to the several million tons of coal mined annually by SNSK in the past. The region is to make a living from tourism and research in the future.
The Svalbard archipelago, the largest island of which is Spitsbergen, is the northernmost sovereign the territory of Norway. The 1920 treaty stipulated that although Svalbard is administered by Norway, all signatories have free access to it and the right to economic exploitation. Russia acceded to this treaty in 1925; in the Barentsburg estate, the Russians extract, among others, coal and run a research station. (PAP)
