The Last of Us Is Bringing 9 Episodes of Apocalyptic Adventure to HBO

We didn’t have to wait long for the first bonafide TV sensation of 2023: HBO’s The Last of Us. Based on the beloved video game, the show follows a cynical man named Joel (Pedro Pascal) who becomes a reluctant guardian for young Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a girl born into a post-apocalyptic society deteriorated from a pandemic brought on by horrific fungal infections.

Helmed by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann—the main creative force behind the original 2013 game—The Last of Us was placed in more than capable hands. And it appears to have paid off, as the show’s first season currently has a shining 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Season 1 of The Last of Us is said to have cost HBO upwards of $100 million, so it’s fair to say that the network is making a bet that this video game adaptation will, uh, turn out a bit better than most of the others. From our vantage point, it’s looking so far so good. Pascal and Ramsey are the only two main cast members, as the show jumps from timeline to timeline and setting to setting, with recurring and guest stars that also include Gabriel Luna, Nico Parker, Anna Torv, Murray Bartlettand Nick Offerman. The cast and the writing are in tune with each other, and the visual language manages to catch the right tone to keep you on the edge of your seat. And when you see the infected, well, they’re just as scary as you’d hope them to be.

When is The Last of Us Episode 5 coming onto HBO Max?

Because of the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 12th, HBO wisely released Episode 5 of The Last of Us, “Endure and Survive,” onto HBO Max two days early. The episode was made available to stream on Friday, February 10th at 9:00 PM EST.

When is the next episode of The Last of Us coming out?

Each episode of The Last of Us will air on HBO on Sunday nights at 9:00 PM EST, and will be available to stream on HBO Max at the same time.

Episode 6, however will hit HBO Max and air on HBO proper on February 19, at 9:00 PM.

How many episodes of The Last of Us are left?
