Nick Offerman has blasted the “bigots” who posted “homophobic hate” on his social media following his appearance in The Last of Us.

In the HBO series’ standalone episode ‘Long Long Time’, we follow Offerman’s character Bill, a survivalist who develops a romantic relationship with a man named Frank (Murray Bartlett).

We see the couple thrive over the years as they build a life together within Bill’s compound, though the episode eventually ends in heartbreak when they decide to end their lives after Frank becomes terminally ill.

While the episode struck a chord with many viewers and received widespread praise, Offerman told i that it also drew in “a lot of homophobic hate via social media”.

“I was kind of fascinated by how openly people will express hate and brand themselves as bigots,” he said. “I kept thinking: ‘We can see you!'”

The Parks and Recreation actor then noted how concerning it is that “the public expression of that kind of hatred is still pretty safe” in 2023.

“We’re basically punishing people for loving wrong,” he continued. “All these people want to do is to love each other. Like, I love Belted Galloway cows. I also love walnut trees. People who come to my [woodworking shop in LA] are straight, gay, trans, non-gender-conforming… it doesn’t matter if you want to make a table, and why should it?”

Offerman also recently said that he was taken aback by the acclaim for ‘Long Long Time’, noting that “it was treated by the entire production [crew] like the exquisite hit that it became.”

The Last of Us season 1 is currently available to watch on Max.
