Marty Moates changed the moto game in a big way with his dominant USGP win on his LOP Yamaha in 1980, but he built a reputation as one of the tough guys of sport when his career was blossoming. Marty raced a handful of different machines from Husqvarna to Ossa. This shot is from 1977 and was used in the SIDI boot catalog.

MOOSE RACING SX-1 WHEEL SETS
Moose Racing’s SX-1 Complete Wheels feature rims made from extruded 7000 series aluminum, and the hubs are a forged 6061 T6 aluminum with a non-fading anodized finish. All rims undergo a 3-stage heat treatment process. They come laced and trued with T3002H stainless steel polished spokes. Wheels come with a black rim and a color matched hub to the bike manufacturer. Wheels are available in 18”, 19”, and 21” for late model bikes. Also, available in 14”, 16”, 17”, and 19” for both standard and big wheel 80/85cc fitments. Wheels will come complete with spacers for convenience. MSRP is listed ranging from $333.95 to $487.95.

I really enjoyed the Honda XR600 after getting some riding tips from Scott Summers (he said ride it like an auto, no clutch, throttle and brake hard- it won’t stall!) and after talking with my Aussie friend Geoff Ballard (a true off-road hero). He said the best mod was to put an XR250 tank and saddle on the machine. It completely slimmed up the ergos and made the XR much easier and fun to ride. I raced this wagon at several events including the Idaho City Qualifier and did quite well in 1995.
