Zamalek’s reported interest in Peseiro: The unlikelihood and complications

Jose Peseiro

Jose Peseiro has come under fire in the Nigerian football community following the sub-par performance of the Super Eagles of Nigeria

Egyptian club Zamalek is reportedly eyeing the head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, as a potential successor to Juan Carlos Osorio, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Portuguese manager has faced intense scrutiny in the Nigerian football community following the Super Eagles’ disappointing results, culminating in a draw against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in World Cup qualifying matches.

Recent reports by Koora indicate that Zamalek is considering offering the former Sporting CP boss an exit route from his current Nigerian role.

Peseiro’s tenure with the Super Eagles has seen mixed results—six wins, six losses, and three draws.

While he secured Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualification, consecutive draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, securing only 2 points and placing third in their World Cup qualifying group, have been a letdown.

Despite the mounting pressure, Peseiro remains steadfast in his goal to clinch Nigeria’s fourth AFCON trophy, despite his underwhelming track record.

Calls for Peseiro’s dismissal from Nigerian football circles have coincided with Zamalek’s interest in recruiting him.

However, the coach’s contract with the Nigeria Football Federation extends beyond the AFCON tournament. His owed salary could also serve as a reason to stay put until paid.

NFF board member Nse Essien expressed discontent with Peseiro’s performance but acknowledged their obligation to honour his contract, making it challenging to terminate his employment.

This simply means that his dismissal would entail payment of his outstanding salary, adding financial responsibilities to the federation.

This complex situation casts doubt on the likelihood of Peseiro’s potential move to Zamalek—if reports are true—as his contractual obligations with the Nigerian Football Federation stand as a significant barrier.
