Frenchman Luko’s offer is somewhat complementary to what Coya is doing. The digital insurer has created a platform where additional services for insurance around the house are offered: handyman service, prevention advice via video, monitoring of electricity and water consumption. According to its own statements, Luko is the fastest growing digital insurer in France with more than 200,000 customers. The company’s list of investors includes names like Accel and the Founders Fund. In total, more than 70 million euros were invested here.
Raphaël Vullierme, CEO of Luko, sees himself in the position of a “new European market leader” in the field of digital insurers as a result of the merger. Coya AG, as the risk carrier of the new group, is renamed Luko Insurance AG and retains its headquarters in Berlin. The entire team including management and the investors of Coya remain on board and will remain part of the Luko Group, according to the merger announcement by the two companies.

One and one is strength. The mathematics of the founders of these two insurtech companies is no different: the Berlin insurer Coya is merging with the French company Luko. Together, the two form the largest pan-European merger of two insurtechs with a license as a full insurer, according to the two companies.
Now, Coya alone was no insignificant player in the field of digital insurers , at least in the initial period after it was founded by Andrew Shaw in 2016: since then, 40 million US dollars have flowed into the startup, which promises to insure easily and without paperwork – in various areas: household, liability, pet and bicycle insurance the Berliners, 80,000 people (and pets) are already protected against damage.
Because it is technology-based, Coya can operate much more efficiently than traditional insurers, says the company. The model was the successful insurance startup Lemonade from the USA. The German supervisory authority BaFin granted Coya an insurance license in 2018. All of this convinced investors like Peter Thiel, who had already gotten involved with Valar Ventures in the first round, or the German VC Headline.
