Chhattisgarh-bred and Kolkata-based singer-songwriter Tiyasha Biswas first popped up on our radar when she collaborated with Nagpur musician Atul Gupta and Oh Arya on the R&B/pop track “Kind of Lies” last year. Now, Biswas has lent her tender vocals to the emotive “Nemesis” which has been penned by Gupta.

Biswas recalls always being fascinated with music and even bunking classes so that she could sit in front of her computer with her headphones on, singing along to her favorite tunes. Some of those tunes include American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift’s classics such as “You Belong With Me,” “Back to December” and “Love Story.” The singer says, “I wrote the lyrics of those songs on the back of my school notebook to sing it out loud.”

Since then, the artist began posting covers to SoundCloud, YouTube and Instagram and even began learning vocal exercises, warmups and techniques online to better her skills. She says, “I never knew my first debut with Atul and Arya, ‘Kinds of Lies,’ and my covers would get so much love and appreciation.”

On how the collaboration for “Nemesis” came to be, Biswas says, “Atul sent me the unfinished demo track and I was so happy and excited for him. But when he asked me to record a piano version of ‘Nemesis,’ the happiness was unreal.” She adds, “This was a big deal to me. Falling in and out of the belief that I can do it, and I finally did it.”

Biswas’ poignant and sobering vocals rest quite perfectly on a bed of lush piano chords and intricate movements. According to the singer-songwriter, “Nemesis” talks of “betrayal but not giving up.” The musician adds, “ something from which you cannot move on, which has been put into the verses beautifully by Atul.” Gupta produced, mixed and mastered the track while Biswas recorded her parts at her home studio.

Currently, the artist is part of a theater group in Kolkata where she plans on expanding her role as a creative individual while also learning Indian classical music. She says, “I have so much to know and learn about. I want to focus more on growing this time.”
