California Highway PatrolA man surfing off Salmon Creek Beach just north of Bodega Bay was bitten by a shark early Sunday morning, sustaining injuries to his left thigh. He is in critical condition but expected to survive, authorities say.
The unidentified man in his 30s was taken out to the beach parking lot by a group of surfers who were in the water with him at the time of the attack, as well as other bystanders. Emergency officials responded to the scene at approximately 9 a.m. and stopped the bleeding with a tourniquet before airlifting the victim to a nearby hospital.
“CHP H-32 is enroute to Santa Rosa Memorial with a trauma patient who was reported to have been bitten by a shark,” read a post from the California Highway Patrol Golden Gate Divisions Air Operations on Facebook. “Bodega Bay Fire Protection District, Sonoma Sheriff, and California State Parks are currently at the scene and the patient is reported to be critically injured. More details to follow.”

California Highway PatrolShark attacks are extremely uncommon in California. Fewer than 200 incidents involving all species of sharks have occurred in the state since 1950. Fifteen of them were fatal and involved solely white sharks, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. It’s not yet clear what type of shark was involved in Sunday’s incident.
“I was out with five guys — we heard a couple people yell shark about 50 feet away,” a surfer named Cody, who declined to share his last name, told KPIX. “It was by the mouth of the river. The sharks come there to get salmon…Next thing I heard the dude screaming. I knew he got bit.”
According to KPIX, the victim’s surfboard had deep indentations from the shark’s teeth.
Josh Perucchi, a volunteer firefighter with the Bodega Bay Fire Department, told the Mercury News the man was “conscious and alert” by the time he was flown out.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
